Why Are The Lights In My Home Flickering?

Flickering Lights

One annoying electrical problem that you may face is your lights always flickering. This issue can come from several different problems with your electrical system. It’s best to know what these problems are so that you can identify the root cause of your flickering lights.

Loose Light Bulb

If you take notice that the flickering only seems to occur at one light, then it could be the light bulb. Whenever a light bulb is loose within a socket, it can receive inconsistent power. This will cause an undesirable flickering effect. Turn off the light bulb and wait for it to cool down. You can also use a towel to help protect your hand from the heat of an incandescent bulb. Tighten the bulb back into its socket and turn the light back on. This should get rid of the flickering altogether.

Bulb or Dimmer Incompatibility

Another cause of flickering is an incompatibility between the bulb and the switch. It could also be an issue with the type of bulb in general. For example, LED and fluorescent light bulbs are not compatible with dimmer switches. The conventional switches are best for halogen and incandescent bulbs. If you have the LED or fluorescent bulbs hooked up to a non-compatible dinner, it can cause flickering. If you are using it for CFL light bulbs, it’s very normal for them to flicker when they’re first powering up. They can also flicker when the room is colder than normal. You can solve this problem by using a different type of light bulb in your home.

Overloaded Circuit

If you notice a bunch of lights start to flicker at the same time, then it could be due to an overload on your circuit. Pay attention to what else is running at the time that you have your flickering issue. If you notice that it happens when an appliance turns on, this will signal that it’s an overloaded circuit. To handle this issue, it’s best to call in an electrician to upgrade your electrical circuits.

Loose Electrical Connection

If you notice that the flickering is worse than it used to be, you likely have loose wiring. This loose wire can be anywhere in your electrical system. This can be due to an incorrect installation, outdated wiring, and normal wear and tear of the system. To fix this flickering issue, it’s best to call in a licensed electrician. A loose connection anywhere in your electrical system can be a fire hazard for your home.
