5 Ways to Prepare Your HVAC Unit for Spring

Spring is right around the corner, and now is the time to get your HVAC unit ready. There are several different things that you should do to the system to help to ensure that the unit is working correctly and you will be able to keep your home cool.

1. Outdoor Unit Cleaning

Your outdoor unit is exposed to the elements outside, leading the unit to collect leaves, dirt, and other debris. When there is a lot of debris in the unit, it can cause the unit to work harder. When this happens, it can lead to increased utility bills and can cause damage to the machine. To clean the unit, wipe off large particles of debris and then vacuum the rest of the dirt out. After you have vacuumed, carefully take your water hose, and rinse the unit out.

2. Indoor Unit Cleaning

You will want to make sure that your indoor unit is clean as well. Over time, dust can get on the air conditioning unit, which can cause damage to the machine. To clean, turn the unit off and wipe it down with a damp cloth and vacuum the inside of the unit. In addition to the indoor unit itself, make sure that you clean the vents and registers as these can become dirty with debris and pet hair.

3. Changing Your Air Filter

You really should be changing the air filter on your HVAC unit every one to three months, depending on your unit’s requirements and the filter system it has. If you have not changed out your filter, do so now. Clean air filters can help ensure that your home’s airflow is great and that your air conditioner runs at peak efficiency.

4. Testing Your System

A great way to make sure that your air conditioner is running properly is to turn it on to see if there are any issues. Wait for a warm day and turn the air conditioner on. Go to each air vent in your home and make sure that there is proper airflow. Keep an eye on your thermostat and listen to when the unit goes off and comes on. If you see any issues, you will want to call for a repair as soon as possible.

5. Schedule Spring Maintenance

A great way to ensure that your air conditioning system is ready for spring is to schedule an HVAC system maintenance with us.
