How To Flush a Radiator

Retro styled cast iron radiator

If your radiator isn’t warming up like it used to or you’ve noticed cold spots, it might be time for a radiator flush. Over time, the radiators in your home’s heating system can collect rust, sludge, and mineral deposits that reduce efficiency and restrict heat distribution. In the greater Chicago area’s frigid winters, radiator cleaning is an essential part of HVAC maintenance. Whether you want to attempt it yourself or understand the process before calling in the pros, here’s a practical, step-by-step guide to help.

Why You Should Flush Your Radiator

Flushing your radiator helps remove built-up sediment, rust, and other debris that accumulate over time. This buildup can cause blockages, reduce heat output, and force your boiler to work harder, ultimately shortening the lifespan of your system. A proper radiator flush improves heating efficiency and helps prevent long-term damage to your home’s heating system. For most homes in the greater Chicago area, radiator flushing should be done every year as part of routine heating system maintenance.

Radiator Flush Guide

Cahill Heating, Cooling, Electric, Plumbing & Sewer has been providing expert heating services in the greater Chicago area for over 50 years. While we always recommend professional service for the best results, we know that many homeowners like to handle smaller tasks themselves. If you’re confident in your DIY skills, here’s how to properly flush a radiator to improve performance and protect your system.

Tools You’ll Need

Before starting, gather the tools and supplies you’ll need to complete the flush safely and effectively:

  • Adjustable wrench or radiator key
  • Hose or bucket
  • Towels or plastic sheeting
  • Protective gloves and eyewear
  • Radiator cleaner (optional)
  • Screwdriver
  • Drain pan

Safety Precautions

Before beginning any HVAC maintenance task, take the proper safety steps to avoid injury or damage:

  • Turn off the heating system: Allow the entire system to cool completely before starting to avoid burns.
  • Wear protective gear: Gloves and safety glasses protect you from hot water, sharp edges, or chemical cleaners.
  • Lay down towels or plastic sheets: This will help protect your flooring from water spills during the process.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Once you’re ready and your radiator has cooled, follow these steps:

  1. Close both the valves on the radiator—one at each end—to isolate it from the system.
  2. Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and loosen the bleed valve at the top using a radiator key.
  3. Disconnect the radiator from both valves using a wrench. Be prepared for water to drain out.
  4. Drain the radiator completely by tipping it toward the drain pan or using a hose if needed.
  5. Flush the radiator by filling it with water and gently shaking or rinsing to dislodge debris. Use a radiator cleaner if desired, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Repeat flushing until the water runs clear.
  7. Reconnect the radiator to the valves and tighten everything securely.
  8. Bleed the radiator to remove any trapped air once the heating system is back on. To do this, turn the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator using a radiator key or flathead screwdriver. You’ll hear a hissing sound as the air escapes—once water starts flowing out steadily, close the valve. This ensures your radiator heats evenly and efficiently.
  9. Turn your system back on.
  10. As it runs, check for leaks and make sure that the radiator is heating evenly.

DIY vs. Professional Radiator Flushing

While a confident DIYer can complete a basic radiator flush, more complex systems or multiple radiators may require professional attention. If your radiator still doesn’t heat properly after flushing or if you notice signs of severe rust, leaks, or uneven heating throughout the home, it’s time to call a licensed HVAC professional.
